Top Ten Songs of 2007

Y2K + 7 was a year much like 2006, 2005, and 2004.  I like my job, I like my town, I like my church, I like my friends, and I like my music.  Probably need to grow up a little bit, I'll put that numero uno on my resolution list.  Anyway, here is my top ten songs for the year that was.  My love for the female singer, while always obvious, is now bordering on ridiculous.

1.  "Open Your Heart"  Lavender Daimond

Well, the streets are low when you have to go, where are you running to?

2.  "Punctual As Usual"  The Parson Red Heads

I'm trying out this new technique; I close my eyes whenever you speak....to me

3.  "Sideways"  Let's go Sailing

I have no problem dipping in my feet, but the problem comes when I have to jump.

4.  "Lips are Unhappy"  Lucky Soul

Pretending that everythings cool, when I'm twenty seven shades of blue, and my lips are unhappy without you.

5. "23"  Blonde Redhead

Twenty three seconds; in you I see a chance; twenty three magic.

6.  "F*** was I"  Jenny Owen Youngs

Love is so embarassing; I'm this awkward and uncomfortable thing.

7.  "Keep It Together"  Aqueduct

You've got to keep it together; swear to me you won't fall apart.

8.  "Monster"  You Say Party! We Say Die!

The way we're made protects us; the bones, the muscles shelter; but it's our blood that mends us.

9.  "Challengers"  The New Pornographers

"Be safe" you say; whatever mess you're in--your mine, okay; if that is the custom, I'm down.

10.  "Kate"  Sambassadeur

Tides don't last forever; don't you know?

Bye 2007,  Hello 2008...

In the early stages of election 2008 research, I can already percieve a shift in my political make-up.  Throughout my political life I have been true blue (or should I say red) to the Republican party and conservative ideology.  I supported very pragmatically in the primaries; who would stand the best chance in defeateing the democratic enemy?  I like President Bush; and more than likely I would have voted for him regardless; but my singular reason for supporting Bush was his potential to win the presidency.  To me now, that mindset lacks integrity.

A neat site if you are beginning your research is http://www.selectsmart.com/president/2008.html.  It allows you to complete a fairly detailed survey concerning political issues, then spits back a hierarchy of canditates according to the data provided.  Although I would never use this information to wholly determine my vote, I do believe it is a good starting point for accertaining possible canditates to support.  It appears that I match up closest to the ideology of Tom Tancredo (Obama was last).

I then proceeded to http://www.pollingreport.com/2008.htm to atleast get a feel for the political landscape of America as of now.  In the last Republican poll, Tommy boy was recieving about 1% of the vote.  It appears it will be a 3 horse race between Rudy, McCain, and Fred Thompson.

Which brings up the question: Should pragmatism play atleast a small role in casting your vote?  Let's say after my research, I do settle on Tom Tancredo.  The chances of him making a glory run at the White House are effectively zilch.  However, hypothetically, let's say it is a  two horse race between Giuliani and McCain.  And let's say that I have also determined that Giuliani is the devil and the wrong man for the job and McCain, although not my first pick, is high on my list of candidates.  Wouldn't my vote be more effective if I voted for McCain, who has a legitimate chance of winning the bid, instead of Tancredo, who has no chance but who I feel is the man for the job???  Or does that lack integrity???

Socially Responsible Music

This summer I will be putting together several compilation cd's according to themes.  This is my first:

There is nothing better than a love song.  My iTunes is a virtual hot bed, complete with candle light, for these songs to gather, mate, and reproduce even more and more love songs.  Although many of these songs are emotional and artistic, often times the music becomes repetitive, shallow, even limited.  Disregarding the whole gamut of emotions, music seems to have exclusively endorsed this one emotion--an emotion that at its core can only be shared by two people out of 6 billion.  Bigger music does exist....right?

Unfortunately, music that matters has become helplessly intertwined with songs that are either 1) overtly political or 2) attack individuals.  When Green Day can ascend to the forefront of socially responsible music simply by slamming our president and offering nothing in return, music has become a tattered veil for gutless vendettas.  I can think of nothing more lazy. It is of such greater worth to support and propagate rather than berate and assail.  It is of such greater impact to artfully graft a social position into song than to carelessly jam a song into a social blitzkrieg.  It is of such greater awareness to critique society than criticize individuals.

True socially responsible music offers a commentary on society not political stances...big enough to address the ills of the world yet small enough to effect the mind of one listener.  True socially responsible music finds its power in the vehicle it uses, the song itself. These songs are first and foremost just really great songs.  Secondary is the fact that they are really great songs that simply happen to have a finger on the pulse of our society.

SXSW 2007 "Go Big or Go Home"

I attended sxsw in austin over spring break.  Is it my favorite time of the whole year?  Only the yule tide season rivals it.  This year was fantastic.  I am getting better and better at it.  2007 was the year of the keyboard, the beard, and the female lead singer.....all very, very dear to my heart.  After the numerous slices of pizza, late night denny reviews, two many bands to count, dancing, dancing, and more dancing, and trying to make eye contact with every female lead singer, what I will carry with me most is the same as it is every year: friends and music...a deadly combination.  Here is some of the fallout.
